The key to creating a perfect, durable surface, or floor, is in the selection of the correct method of preparation – all too often incorrect preparation systems lead to costly failures.

The definition of surface preparation is a surface treatment process by which a material surface is prepared for further modification e.g. texturing a floor in readiness for the application of a coating. Some surface preparation techniques are also used for finishing a surface e.g polishing terrazzo tiles.

The process begins with an assessment of the size and scope of the project, the composition of the surface being treated and the material being applied, in order to select the correct equipment and surface preparation, removal or finishing methods to employ. It is important to get expert advice.

Common problems experienced by the contractor are uneven surfaces including high spots, joints and removal of old flooring systems such as coatings, vinyls, carpets, sticky residues and levelling compounds.

The type and size of the machine, and accessories, selected will determine production rates achievable and degree of profiling required for the specified material to be applied.
